What is the Autism at Work Playbook and where did it come from?
There is a loose collaboration between some of the worlds largest corporations focused on programs for sourcing, interviewing, onboarding, supporting, and retaining autistic workers. This effort is generically referred to as Autism at Work. The Autism at Work Playbook guides you through much of what needs to be considered for a successful program. It also includes the learnings from the programs of the various companies. The Playbook came from the direct effort of these companies:
Having Asperger's and taking words literally I find the title to be misleading. I think of a playbook as exact steps, patterns, or moves which is reinforced by the cover graphic of a football play. Once I got over the title not matching the content and started looking at the work as guided discussion of the many aspect to a comprehensive end to end program, I found it to be a great resource.
The points to consider and advice in the Playbook is well thought out and worth the time to consider. The programs described are extremely extensive, but they are of a scale that requires resources generally only available in the biggest corporations. While many of the concept and considerations presented in the Autism at Work Playbook transfer to the less than global scale company, I believe the end to end implementation strategy must be individual steps which show value to the company quickly. For the average sized business starting with awareness and manager training is a quick win as everyone, not just the neurodiverse will benefit. Once the company see the value incorporating the neurodiverse brings they we be more open to the next step of an end to end Autism at Work program.
Approaches for the vast majority of employers need to be developed and presented in a How To manner instead of a Things to Consider approach. The Autism at Work Playbook provides a much needed and extensive foundation on which to build approached for various business and industry segments.
Kudos to all the people at the various companies involved in creating the Autism at Work Playbook. Knowing some of you, I know it is a mission and a labor of love. Thank you.
